Vodacom Group has entered a strategic partnership with Elon Musk’s Starlink to deliver high-speed, low-latency broadband to businesses and rural areas across Africa. The Johannesburg-based company announced the deal on 12 November 2025, aiming to take advantage of Starlink’s satellite strength into Vodacom’s mobile network to boost coverage and performance.
The agreement allows Vodacom to resell Starlink equipment and services to enterprise and small business customers across the continent. Starlink is currently available in 25 African markets, but not in South Africa.
Expanding Network Reach and Connectivity
Through the integration, Vodacom wants to use Starlink’s satellite services to work well with its existing 4G, 5G, fiber, MPLS, microwave, and GEO satellite coverage. The partnership is expected to accelerate network expansion while improving performance in underserved rural communities.
According to Vodacom, the collaboration will deliver “robust connectivity to remote schools, health centres, and communities, empowering millions with access to digital services and information.” The arrangement also includes Vodacom’s capability to offer pay-as-you-use backup internet, 100% unbreakable internet, device-as-a-service, and branch network pooling.
Strategic Alignment With Vision 2030
The partnership supports Vodacom’s Vision 2030 strategy to grow its customer base to 260 million and its financial services customers to 120 million within five years. By combining terrestrial and satellite technologies, Vodacom aims to edge closer to universal coverage.
Starlink’s vice president, Chad Gibbs, said the collaboration will allow the service to reach even more people, businesses, and organisations across Africa. Vodacom CEO Shameel Joosub noted the deal aligns with efforts to expand digital access in previously underserved areas.
Vodacom confirmed that rolling out Starlink services in South Africa will depend on licensing approvals, with the company exploring equity-equivalent programs to comply with local regulations. Once operational, Vodacom will offer Starlink as part of its enterprise solutions and broadband portfolio.
The deal represents a big step for Vodacom in delivering reliable, high-speed internet across the continent, particularly in areas where traditional infrastructure is limited. Starlink’s satellite technology is expected to play a crucial role in expanding coverage to remote and rural regions.
Vodacom plans to leverage the partnership to complement existing network capabilities and enhance connectivity for businesses, schools, and communities. The agreement puts Vodacom in good place to offer a seamless combination of terrestrial and space-based internet services across Africa.
