The City of Johannesburg Department of Public Safety said that Mr David Tembe, Strategic Advisor to the Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Public Safety, Dr Mgcini Tshwaku, has passed away.
Mr Tembe was found not moving at his home yesterday, and help came fast, but he was declared dead at the place.
Mr Tembe, who was once Chief of the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) and MMC for Public Safety, worked in public service for more than 40 years. A post-mortem check will be done to find the exact cause of death.
He started work in 1981 as a paramedic with Johannesburg Emergency Medical Services and moved up in the ranks over time. In 2017, he became JMPD Chief and later worked as MMC for Public Safety from 2021 to 2023.
Legacy of Service and Leadership
During his work, Mr Tembe was known for helping the community and for caring for his team. He still gave his advice as Strategic Advisor to the current MMC, using his long experience to help the team, and played a key part in making Johannesburg streets safer.
His work won him respect for his hard work, honesty, and lead skills. His team said he never stopped trying to make public safety better. Mr Tembe’s work touched all parts of the safety team, leaving a long-lasting mark on the city.
MMC Dr Mgcini Tshwaku said, “Our thoughts are with Mr Tembe’s family, friends, and former colleagues during this difficult time.” The department said it stands together in grief while also honoring his long service to the people of Johannesburg.
The City of Johannesburg Department of Public Safety said Mr Tembe had a strong and long career and that funeral and memorial plans will be shared soon. His loss leaves a big gap in the city’s safety team.
His team and the wider public safety group are expected to honor Mr Tembe’s work and life. His long career and many lead roles show a life spent on public safety and helping the people.
The department said it will keep working on the programs and rules he stood for, making sure his work and ideas stay part of Johannesburg safety.
